How long to write a novel?
It’s probably true that writing a children’s book takes less time than writing an entire novel, but how long it takes for writers to write a novel depends largely on … how long it takes a writer to write it.
Many authors begin their writing journey expected to write a novel in 180 days or less, but there are many variables.
Many authors who participate in the NaNoWriMo annual competition (write a manuscript of 50,000 words in the month of November) have achieved the goal (with varying quality or refinement of writing results due to time constraints).

How long it takes to write a novel actually depends on factors both inside and outside your control. Keep in mind that any genre of book you will probably spend more time thinking about the story than writing it.
Although a picture book may only contain 500 words, each word must be counted – don’t assume it will be easy just because writing time is relatively short, as it’s mostly pictures.
In general, a writer should expect to spend 3-7 months writing a 100-page book if they write more than 1,500 words a week.
It can take anywhere from 4 to 9 months to write a 300-page book, averaging about 80,000 words (1,500 words per week).

It’s pretty easy to roughly estimate how long it will take you to write a novel that is two, three, or four times the size of a 30,000 word book.
Once you know how long it will take you to write each chapter of your book, you are closer to understanding how long it will take to write 500 word words. Once you know how long it takes to write an average of 500 quality words, you can multiply that time and set a deadline.
Find a convenient number of words to write each day and stick to that number. Set a daily word goal based on how much you can write each day, and how fast you would like to finish writing your book.
When writing a non-fiction book and want your readers to be able to complete a chapter in twenty minutes or less, remember that the average reading speed is 200 words per minute, so adjust the length accordingly.
As you can see, if you write an average of 1,500 words per week, and if you don’t have the right system to quickly complete a book, it may take 4 months to more than a year to write a book.
It can take from 2 months to a whole year to write a book, depending on your word count, frequency of writing, and how much you actually write in each session. However, your schedule will depend on the number and type of your books, and daily writing habits.
How many days to write a novel?
We’ll look at a few different factors to help you determine a realistic time frame for whether you can actually write a book in 30 days, as well as understand why you don’t have the time to write the book you have longed for.
If you follow my advice you can write a book in as little as three to six months which will cut your writing time dramatically in half. Many authors say it takes up to a year to write a book, but it is possible for authors to finish their books in only a month to 90 days with special systems.
It no longer makes sense to write a book to a time-constraint time. Books don’t need to be written faster, but the wrirting should be effective and the best it can be. Try to spend more time on the parts that really matter, rather than meeting deadlines.

When you’re really in the flow, you can average 1,800 words a day. Which can take you 4 or 5 hours. When I write I sit at the computer at 9 in the morning and finish at 1 p.m. in time for lunch. The afternoon is for thinking and other things.
This probably means about 5 hours a day writing a book until you reach a point where writing books is part of how you live. It becomes a daily habit.
How long does it take to write a light novel?
If you write a typical novel (50,000 words or more) on a typical schedule (a few hours of writing a day), you will probably fall somewhere in that 6 to 12 month range.

In general, a novella is a work of fiction anything below 30 000 words in length. When I write, I like to set quite a rigid schedule. If I don’t I get lazy and the book takes forever.

How long does it take to write a novel on average?
The average novel size is between 50 to 80,000 words, but anuything over 30 000 is considered a novel. It’s very flexible and can go as high as the writer feels necessary to tell the story.
After experimenting with various daily word taregts, I’ve found that 1000 words a day, 6 days a week is a pretty good schedule, not counting for writer’s block, of course!
On that basis, a 60000 word book would take 60 days to finish the first draft.

However, that’s first draft only! You should triple this number to account for self-edits, beta reading and final editing before you could say the novel is finished. It’s a long haul!
Can you write a novel in 30 days?
This level of writing is the basis of the NaNoWriMo annual competition, where a complete novel has to written in it’s final form within the 30 day time period.
This is a very tough target and you have to ask questions about the quality of the final draft.
Normally, a manuscript goes through several drafts, during which time there is a lot reflection and many changes are made, both to the story flow and corrections by editors.
In 30 days it just isn’t possible to go through all the necessary parts of the creation processes needed for producing a good novel.
That said, with an aggressive daily word target of 1500 to 2000 words, it’s easily doable to write the first draft of a novel.
How long does it take to write a 500 page book?
500 pages is a big novel! Apart from writing to your daily word target, such a book needs a really good structure and story to keep the reader turning the pages.
It really is a marathon. If you don’t love the content you’re creating, you risk getting bored with it before it’s finished.
There are on average 275 words to a page, which means a 500 page novel would have 137,500 words. With a conservative word target of 1500 words per day, a 500 word book would take about 91 days or 3 months to first draft.
