Many authors start their journey as a writer expecting to write a novel in 180 days or less. Many authors who participate in the annual NaNoWriMo competition (write MS 50,000 words in November) have achieved their goal (varying quality or refinement of writing results due to time constraints).

You will be surprised how long it takes to write a novel between plot, compilation time and editing time.

Author Ann Charnock breaks down the process of writing a novel using spreadsheets. Writing the first draft of a book is a grueling and daunting process. Ask a hundred writers how long it takes them to write their first drafts, and you get a hundred different answers. The average first-time writer can spend anywhere from 4 months to over a year writing a book.

It can take from 2 months to a whole year to write a book, depending on your word count, frequency of writing, and how much you actually write in each session.

How long it takes to complete your book depends on how often you come, sit down, and write on the pages of the book. If you are researching or getting stuck, or if you improve your suggestions or if there is a problem with your point of view, writing a novel can take a long time.

Can you write a book in 30 days?

A quick glance at the work of writers such as Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, and Louise Erdrich suggests that dedicated writers might release a new piece of fiction every two to four years.

What bothers me is that it took me twice, sometimes even longer, to prepare a manuscript. When I started my last novel “The Shelter”, I decided to shorten my writing time. I wrote the first draft of my third book for 100 days of writing practice in three months. I wrote my first novel “Settled Life”, which took a few years and often took a few months of rest.

I put the novel aside amid dark thoughts that I will never write again. At the time, I was writing and publishing short stories, joining the online writing community, and reading every writing book I could find. Having written my first book at breakneck speed, I was skeptical about fast writing. But if I had to start over, I might wonder how long it would take to write this amazing, wonderful idea, definitely a bestseller.

Can I write a book in a month?

On the other hand, other writers, such as Jane Greene, whose latest novel, The Temptation of Fate, became a New York Times bestseller, write their books in six months. Some of the most famous authors wrote one book in 3-6 years, others published 3-6 books a year.

In fact, the vast majority of books for young adults are between 70,000 and 90,000 words and may take a little longer to complete the entire process of writing, proofreading, and self-editing. If you follow all of our advice, you can definitely write your book in as little as three to six months, which will dramatically cut your average writing time in half.

But if you write 1,000 words a day, even if you take a few days off on weekends, you can complete the first draft of a novel in less than three months. As you can see, if you write an average of 1,500 words per week, and if you don’t have the right system to quickly complete a book, it may take 4 months to more than a year to write a book.

If you write more than 1,500 words a week, you can expect to write a 100-page book in 2 to 4 months. If you focus on writing more than 1,500 words a week, it may take an average person 3-7 months to write a 200-page book.

It can take 4 to 9 months to write a 300-page book, averaging about 80,000 words, writing 1,500 or more per week. Well, most chapters are between 2,000 and 5,000 words, so it will take you about 1-3 weeks for each chapter when you first start.

With that in mind, if you’re writing 2,500 words a day, it’s reasonable to expect your first draft to be ready in about 28 days. Of course, if you follow our 24 Hour Typing Example it would mean that physically the fastest time to write this draft manuscript is around 4 days if you write 6 hours a day.

However, remember that NaNoWriMo is designed to help you write more, not write better. NaNoWriMo (National Fiction Writing Month, where writers write 50,000 words in 30 days) is a good starting point. NaNoWriMo can be a great motivation for writing quickly, and the NaNo community is an important source of advice and support.

How long can it take to write a short story?

I would encourage you to set aside some time each day, if possible, and make it a habit to write. You don’t have to be a full-time writer to finish a book, but you must prioritize the writing time, and as with full-time jobs, you need to get the job done during that time. From a writing point of view, it is obvious that the longer the story, the longer it will take to write it.

While a picture book can only have 500 words, each word must be counted, so don’t assume it will be easy just because the writing time is relatively short. If you can develop the habit of writing 500 words every day, and also gradually increase that number, you can theoretically write two full drafts in a year: draft down (writing everything down on the page) and draft up (picking details, nuances, and making key changes).

How long do writers write each day?

The best time frame to complete a book is 100 days, which we mentor and support authors in our 100 Days of Book program. Many authors report that it takes up to a year to write a book, but lately authors finish their books in just a month to 90 days with our special system. In other words, writing a novel in a year for a publisher actually means that he is eighteen months old.

My work shines in more than one month, as evidenced by my first book. But if you write a typical novel (50,000 words or more) on a typical schedule (a few hours of writing a week), you will probably fall somewhere in that 6 to 12 month range.

Why do most writers fail?

However, your schedule will depend on the volume and genre of your book, as well as your day-to-day writing. We’ll look at a few different considerations to help you determine a realistic time frame for whether you can actually write a book in 30 days, and also understand why you don’t have the time to write the book you’ve been longing for.

Your writer type will somehow determine how long it takes you to write a novel. If you ask two authors how long it takes to write a novel, an author who says more than a year can be a subtle helper.
